Your Nontrad Monthly Motivation for December, 2016

Hi to all nontraditional students! (and those who help them.)

This month: People are winding up or getting ready for next semester's work.

Do you have a report to finish? Are you already done with everything? Some have signed up for a course or two for Winter Term.

I hope some of you have time for a real break. It's important to have at least a small break once in awhile to stay motivated. Don't carry on your work for EVERY day of your break...

My advice: TAKE A BREAK - - even if just for 1/2 a day.

Betsyanne

And while you are in your comfy chair, or on your hiking trip, (or whatever you are doing) - - take a break from that, (if you can), and come visit the Nontraditional Student FB page:

Sharing - two more great postings from About.com, re: Summer plans, Colleges, Finals more.

Here are a couple of postings from About.com, some ideas for your summer plans, final exams, more.

Here is the first posting from About.com:

Top Colleges by State, AP Exams, Engineering, & Dr. Who

... and the second one:

Here's How Students Can Get the Most Out of Their Summer
(plus some other articles...)

If you aren't already over at the About.com site, it's worth a visit. You can sign up for all kinds of newsletters there and get these kind of useful stories in your inbox regularly.

Other Summer Plans
You may want to look into taking a couple of classes this summer OR working to get some money in the bank.

The classes idea MIGHT be especially good if you are missing some credits and won't graduate on time if you don't Take Action.

Finals
One of the best websites to use when preparing for finals is the Joe Landsberger site. You may also want to check out these postings from the blog:

And GOOD LUCK on all your finals. Until next time,

Never too old... that's really true. And the sooner you start, the better.

"You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream."

How true this is. When I went back to school, I met an older woman who was taking art courses. She had wanted to do this for a long time. And finally, she was doing what she had dreamed of. She was very happy, she said, and planned to continue with other classes.

At WKU, people can take classes after age 65 and do not have to pay tuition. Maybe a school near you has this program.

And sometimes you can take classes online for no charge. Plus, you can also audit classes for less money.

However you swing it, going back to school may be just what you have been wanting to do for a long time.

If you are not yet back in school, try it out - you might like it!

The Nontraditional Student Site of the Day for Jan. 22 2015: The Planning and Preparing for College Blog.

The Planning and Preparing for College Blog: by C. Herd

From the blog description: "To prepare students and their parents for college success in areas of academic readiness, community service, internships, summer programs, etc. The blog is to be used as a preparation infrastructure on various areas of college topics."

This blog is a great information blog for many different scholarships. It features scholarships for minority groups, but it is fabulous information for anyone.

Many Tennessee schools are featured here, and also other schools from across the country.

I like it. It also has special postings on subjects like College Prep Timeline, How to Prepare for College Correctly, and Preparing for the ACT/SAT Exam.

(See the right side of the blog...)

There are also links here that are test links, College Prep updates, Financial Aid, Summer Programs, Grants, Minority Links, and Internships.

Definitely, this site belongs on your blog list under "Great blogs for Nontrads."

Check it out here: http://ctherd.blogspot.com/

The end of the semester is in sight, nontrads...

Are you excited?
New Phone Excitement - by ashn22 on Flickr.

The end is in sight for this semester, nontraditional students.

Here is a handy site and two links to help you coast towards the end of this semester's classes.

#1. I gave this site to my daughter this semester. I figured it would help her citing sources for papers. It is the Son of Citation Machine, a great site for plugging in your information and receiving help on those pesky source citations.

SON OF CITATION MACHINE.

And here are two articles from this blog about doing well on tests and finals:

#2: 10 Tips for Doing Well on Final Exams

#3. Get Organized for Finals

I hope everyone is doing great and sees that proverbial Light at the End of the Tunnel and feels good about this semester.

Do you have some fun Winter Break plans? Or maybe you plan to go school again for Winter Term?

Whatever you have planned, do have a wonderful holiday and here is hoping school is going just fine.

More than One (academic) Love... Torn between Two Druthers?

Torn Between Two Lovers - - oops - - Druthers.

There, I've said it. You CAN have two academic loves at the very same time.
So how do you decide what academic path to take when you aren't sure which choice is right for you? You could love science and art. Or nursing and social work. And Special Education and Drama.

So what can you do?

#1. Try the old faithful: A double major. That way if one job doesn't work out, you can always try your other love. This does take longer and cost more though.

#2. Take an aptitude test and see which one comes out on top. Or talk to a school advisor.

#3. Make an old-fashioned "Pro" and "Con" list. See what major or profession leads with more reasons on one side or the other.

#4. Make a guess and just pick one, although that's hard to do when you love both fields.

#5. Choose one to be your bread and butter choice (complete the requirements for that field) and tinker with the other. Take a few hobby classes and tell yourself you'll finish it later if you have to.

There is no rule about what you should take in school. And many older, nontraditional students (who are going back to school after a break) can be changing what they like as they grow and learn more about the world and themselves, or may want to break the chains of a career that is no longer right or good for them.

And I believe you can go back to school more than once. It's never too late to make that RIGHT choice for you.

Did you notice that the title almost was the title to a song some of us older nontraditional student remember? It is "Torn Between Two Lovers..." which was written by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, and is sung by Mary MacGregor.

Here is a link to that song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1F5BLLFAeM.

Enjoy! For some nontraditional students, this video will bring back memories!

Bye for now,

What do you want to be when you grow up? Try some free career tests online

About career and aptitude testing

Okay. Maybe you are already grown up. Do you feel like you are going to be in your career forever? Or are you training for another job? To say it another way, is your work your life? Can you live without your job? Do you want to change your work life? Have you been laid off and can't decide what to do next?

Deciding on a change can take some time. It can also take knowing yourself and what you like. If you have a job that is fun, the saying goes, you won't work a day in your life. That sounds great, doesn't it?

In order to start your journey towards another career, you need to find alternatives to what you have already done. One way of learning about choices that are right for you  is by taking an aptitude test.

There are plenty of PAY sites online too that help you do this. Other places you can access FREE career testing or aptitude testing is at a high school OR guidance office at a school you wish to attend.

Some career or aptitude tests can be fun to take. They can clarify what you are qualified to do in a second or third career. These tests can point out some areas you yourself might not have thought. I think that a good new career can be fun and also can utilize what YOU are good at.

Here are some links and sites that may be interesting to you:

Are you changing careers? I have done that at least twice. For those who are doing that, write about it! And send me the link or put it here as a comment.
