Some days are just naturally harder than others, I think.
For instance, some days you wake up late, you aren't feeling good, you have to run to class, or perhaps you are not quite ready for that pop quiz.
But you get through it. You borrow some notes, you get a study group together for a hard class, and you soldier on.
I think there are heros out there who are nontraditional students. They deal with being part of a "Sandwich Generation" of people who are caring for parents AND kids. Yet they are brave enough to be going back to school after a break to improve their lives and often, the lives of others too.
Take a "congratulation" today and pat yourself on the back. Take some time for yourself, and take care of yourself properly.
You deserve it.

Former Nontraditional Student, in Education (English and Allied Arts)
B.A., English, and a minor in Art (the first time!)
This quote is so true for nontraditional students. They are looking at the Big Picture, and going to school sometimes for a long time in order to get that Certification or Diploma. Looking towards the future makes today easier sometimes.
Every baby step of taking classes is a step in the right direction for a better future.
Nontraditional students believe that they CAN do it, no matter how long it takes or how hard the journey is. If a nontraditional student can believe in his or herself, it doesn't matter so much what the world thinks.
Because the journey is all about the student.
I send good thoughts to all nontraditional students and everyone helping them today.

Nontraditional students also need this. All college students need health care!
Not having affordable health care adds a huge burden to the already high cost of going back to school in the U.S. So people going back to school have a double burden after they get out: they have to pay back their school costs PLUS many still have to pay a high monthly insurance premium before and after they finally graduate.
Especially older students. They are not usually covered by their parents' plans. And because they are going back to school, it is harder to get health insurance.
Have you seen the documentary movie, Sicko? It shows how the United States really needs health care reform. It also shows the health care plans of other countries like Canada, France, and even Cuba. Here is the trailer from that movie:
I went to see this movie when it came out. It was great!

A happy, happy Mother's Day to all nontraditional students and all mothers, daughters, sons, grandmothers, and granddaughters out there.
And a remembrance of all our mothers and grandmothers who are no longer with us.
We love you!
You Were There When I was unhappy, and I needed you, you were there. And when I didn't want to acknowledge you, and didn't always tell you I loved you, you were still there. My mother, my grandmother and the many others who took their places in order to help me and guide me through tough times. How I appreciate you now!
And I can't go back to thank you then, But I can try to thank you now. Because you did the best you could with what you knew then. Thank you, my mother and all the other mothers. Because you were there.
I ran across this great blog entry by one of my favorite authors, Steve Pavlina, today.
It is called "10 Tips for College Students." It includes questioning exactly WHY you are choosing to go to college. Steve mentions that he was not sure what he was doing in college the first time he went.
Steve is also a GREAT goal-setter, and shares his goal-setting ways with everyone in this article.
I can recommend Steve Pavlina for his books and other articles as well. He also has a GREAT website where he shares FREE audio programs that are interesting, helpful, and well thought out, like Consulting Your Intuition and Embracing Your Passion, which are both right down a Nontraditional Student's alley.
