An Artist - - and a Nontraditional Student

The Older Artist

I was back on campus at WKU taking teaching classes, when I met an older lady with white hair in the Student Lounge in the Art Department. If I had to guess her age, I would say she was in her 70's.

Of course, I had to ask her what she was taking there, and why she decided to be a nontraditional student.

The Olympics and the Nontraditional Student - some parallels I see.

I definitely see some parallels this week between Olympians and Nontraditional Students while I am watching video clips of the Winter Olympics 2014 on TV.

Every contestant at the Olympics representing their country has practiced long and hard to get there. Some had accidents while practicing or during their competitions. They may not be able to compete any more now. That must be so hard to deal with, after having put so much effort into getting ready.

Nontraditional Students - have you considered going back to school - AGAIN?

I went back to school, after a VERY long break and a career too.

This time, I took Education classes, in preparation for a teaching job. I didn't enjoy it at all, for many reasons. But that is another posting (and hopefully a book too.) But the learning was great. I did enjoy that a lot. And I learned a lot about myself too.

But back to the subject. Has anyone else reading this been back to school, then (after awhile) decided to go back AGAIN? (For another degree, or another whole subject focus?) Were you glad you did it?
