Shades of Christmas Past... then and now...

Remember when...

Christmas meant time with family that is now gone?
If you have young children, now is the time to relive that time through their eyes.

Nontraditional students may live in the same place they grew up - and still more have changed their location to a totally different climate.

How many people used to live in colder areas? I remember snowball fights and walking paths made next to the road on never-melting snow piles about this time of year. It used to be really fun to climb up and down and pretend to be an explorer in the wilderness.

How about ice skating next to a warming house? It sure was a good feeling to take those skates off after a long skating session. Or do you remember walking home after a swimming lesson with hair turned to icicles?

I am from Wisconsin, and these are some memories from my childhood.

A friend of mine grew up in Florida. For her,  the Christmas-time memories include the relaxing sound of ocean surf and decorated, lit up palm trees everywhere she looks. She is there on vacation, and loves the feeling of being there. It just feels like home, and that is a great feeling.

Please share your memories here. Are you in a new place this year? What makes it special for you?

For those students who are enrolled in college right now, I hope your exams went very well.

Whatever your holiday memories are, and where you are located, I hope you have a GREAT holiday season this year.

  1. For me Christmas isn't so much about a place as about people. I have to be with my family over the holidays, even if we don't always agree about every detail of the celebration!

Just before New Year I love to go home to Massachusetts (we'll have a blue moon this December!)and see the snow and the mountains.

Happy Christmas/New Year/whatever to you and your readers........

  2. Hi Betsyanne - I'm in the UK. I like to stay at home for Christmas and enjoy a few well earned days off. I like visiting family as well.

My son is nearly three now and is getting excited about everything to do with Christmas from decorating the tree to making cakes and (of course) receiving a visit from Santa!

  3. Mostly it's the people, but also the place in a bit. We live in a different city but are going home for Christmas. Which is good because while this city is hardly bearable on a day to day basis being stuck here on Christmas would be unfathomable. This is the first year without my grandma though, which changes everything. We used to go to her house for every holiday.

  4. Pursuing college, when I was young I moved many many miles from home, and returning for the holidays wasn't always feasible. So I ended up spending time with friends and experiencing differeing family traditions of those I stayed with.

Last year, my husband and I moved many miles from family and freinds, to pursue our careers.

Once again I'm very grateful for friends who are now family. It makes the holidays special. It's been such a pleasure to spend time with these friends/family during the holidays.

Look for the family and traditions around you, appreciate them and enjoy them. Whether you're home or away.

This is what the holiday season is all about. Time with family, traditions, and friends.

    Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,

    Sophie
